Gareth Morgan, who was 37, was killed instantly in the incident as he cycled home to Melton along the A6006 following a shift at the Six Hills Hotel in January last year.

And on Friday, at Leicester Crown Court, 50-year-old farmworker Timothy Wilkinson, of Coalville, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work.

After the hearing, Gareth’s sister, Natalie Holt, said she had sympathy for the defendant but wanted to do something to prevent other families of cyclists going through the trauma she has faced since her beloved brother’s death.

She told the Melton Times: “I want to beg drivers to be extra vigilant on roads and always be aware of cyclists.

“I just pray that from this, others will take more care and then lives can be saved.”

Natalie said: “I have no ill feeling towards the driver.

“I’m glad he didn’t go to jail.

“There is no point in two lives being ruined.”

Gareth was a father of two teenage children.

His sister added: “My heart will never be fully mended. I love Gareth with all my heart and we miss him more than anything.”
