Melton borough councillor Norman Slater has been charged with theft and will appear in court later this month.
Mr Slater (61), who has been a councillor for 12 years, is charged in connection with a lunch club he operated at The Edge Sure Start Children’s Centre in Dalby Road.
He has been suspended from the ruling Conservative Group but he remains a member of the council and says he still intends to stand for re-election in May.
Mr Slater - who is one of two members for the council’s Warwick Ward - sits on a number of council committees and is the council’s lead member for access. He is also chairman of the Melton Access and Melton Shopmobility groups.
He is due to appear at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court on March 11.
A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “A 61-year-old man has been charged with theft. The charge relates to a report of theft from a Leicestershire County Council-subsidised lunch club held at the Sure Start Centre in Melton.”
