Children's storybook activities raise more cash for Melton play area

More than 100 children enjoyed activities based around a popular children's book and helped raised £220 towards new equipment for a Melton play area.

The youngsters listened to readings of Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom story and then took part in six games to earn stickers.

It was organised by a committee of residents, who are co-ordinating fundraising and a revamp of the play area, and Melton Council’s Sport and Health Alliance team.

There were also cakes being sold - some of which were donated by One Stop or were home-made, a tombola was held and a raffle offered prizes donated by Jumping Jelly Beans, MacMillan Books and Melton Toy Shop.

Children and adults also played a game challenging them to guess the name of the dragon.

Emma Geary, physical activity and development officer with the alliance team, said: “It was a pleasure to be involved in this event and great to see such community spirit.

“I cannot thank the volunteers enough, for cutting up stickers, baking cakes and leading activities on the day.

“It was a fabulous and really well thought out event that we all really enjoyed - we really hope there will be another one soon.”

Jo Frederick, chair of the Baldocks Lane play area project committee, said: “It was great to see the community supporting our event and the park so full of excitement and activity.”

Further money could also be provided for the project if the committee is successful in its application to the Aviva Community Fund. The outcome is decided by public votes and residents can do so at www.avivacommunityfund.co.uk/voting/project/view/16-1896 to support the Baldocks Lane scheme.

Ms Frederick added: “If enough public votes are raised we will have the opportunity to be able to extend the climbing frame and slide at the park.

“This invites inclusivity to the park as children with physical difficulties will be able to use it too.”

The play area dates back 30 years and the fundraisers are replacing the original equipment with new pieces.
