Melton’s first ‘free after three’ car parking initiative is now up and running in a bid to drive footfall into the town centre and boost Melton’s early evening economy.
The pilot, which has been funded by the Melton Business Improvement District (BID) and supported by Melton Council, is offering free parking after 3pm in the council’s Burton Street car park during November and December.
BID manager Shelagh Core said: “The free after three pilot will seek to promote and support the town’s early evening economy and its food/drink, leisure and culture offer.
“It will also seek to support the town’s Christmas marketing campaign and the town’s retailers between 3pm and 6pm, during a period when online and out of town competition is at its highest”.
Car park occupancy and footfall will be recorded throughout the two-month pilot to determine usage and the success of the free after three initiative. If successful, it’s hoped the initiative will be extended into other town centre car parks next year.
