Melton’s new Post Office will be opening at the Bargain Booze store on Sherrard Street on Monday, February 22, at 1pm.
A Post Office spokeswoman said: “The new Post Office will be open from 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 10pm on Sunday.
“This will offer an extra 47 hours and 30 minutes of Post Office service every week.”
As previously reported in the Melton Times when the proposals to open the Post Office in the Bargain Booze store were announced they sparked a mixed reaction from customers and Melton Times readers.
Some were strongly against the idea, questioning its appropriateness particularly for Post Office customers who may have alcohol-related problems and raising concerns about Bargain Booze’s experience in running Post Office services.
Other people, while accepting it might not be the ideal location, said they were grateful Bargain Booze had offered space to accommodate the Post Office when other town businesses hadn’t.
A Bargain Booze spokesman previously told the Melton Times: “As a retailer we’ve seen great results following intergration of post offices into select stores. Not only has this been very successful but has also proved convenient for many local residents.
“Stores have even received recognition from MPs for providing such an important and outstanding service to the community, something we hope to emulate in Melton.
“Melton people should be assured that all staff will be fully trained to the highest standard and be able to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive postal service.”
Adrian Paling, Post Office field change advisor, added: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to Melton residents and we’re confident this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”
The first 10 customers to use the new post office will receive a gift from Bargain Booze. Cupcakes and soft drinks will also be served on the day.
