East Midlands MEP Emma McClarkin visited Melton Cattle Market today (Tuesday) to meet traders and auctioneers and find out more about the proposed modernisation and re-development of the livestock building.
Miss McClarkin said: “Melton Market has been a great asset to this community and region for many years. Its prosperity has a real impact on the local economy. I came to hear what the market’s buyers and sellers have to say about its future.”
Councillor Joe Orson, chairman of Melton Council’s rural, economic and environmental affairs committee, said: “It’s great to have Emma here to experience the vibrancy and variety of the market first hand. Our plans for the replacement livestock building are going well. We have drawings in for planning at the moment and our contractors are testing the market for prices.”
David Willars, chairman of Melton Mowbray Market, added: “We were delighted to welcome Emma. We’re passionate about the value of public markets such as ours, providing an efficient, fair and transparent service to all participants and forming a key part of the local economic and social fabric. We believe the new cattle building and leases will allow us to grow the market further to the benefit of all stakeholders.”
