At the age of 45 Melton woman Renee Downing didn’t expect to be running her first London Marathon.
But the keen runner, who successfully ran a half marathon last month as part of her training, is confident that she’s more than up to the challenge on April 26.
Renee, who is the office manager at Birch Wood Area Special School in Melton, is running in aid of Whizz-Kidz. The charity aims to improve the quality of life of disabled children and young people in the UK through the provision of customised mobility equipment.
Having been inspired by her work at Birch Wood, Renee needs to raise £1,600 for her chosen charity and is seeking sponsorship from Melton residents and businesses.
She said: “Whizz-Kidz is a charity close to my heart as I’ve worked in a special school for 10 years and realise the impact every day of the need for children to have access to enable them to live life to the full.
“Most of my co-workers at school think I’m crackers but have given me their full support as they appreciate how far I’m running.
“I’ve already sold jewellery, held raffles and done cake bakes to raise funds but it would be nice if the local community could help sponsor me.”
