Scout camp site scheme delayed

Have your say

Ambitious plans to upgrade a scout camp site near Melton have been delayed by a year because the scheme will cost £100,000 more than originally thought.

Melton Council approved the proposals at Holwell Pastures in May and it was hoped building work would start this year.

But it will now be 2016 before a timber-framed and clad purpose-built facility will replace the existing five delapidated, temporary buildings on the site, if sufficient money can be secured through grants.

Melton District Scouts have applied for £80,000 from the Leicestershire Scouts organisation and plans to seek funding from the National Lottery for the major part of the balance of the project, which is expected now to cost £350,000.

The group have £25,000 of their own to contribute to the scheme.

Scouts District Commissioner Ian Cliffe said: “It is frustrating we are not able to start building this year.

“We are now looking for about £100,000 more than we originally thought.

“We have to have the electrical supply and the water supply upgraded and the builder’s quotes are higher than we initially budgeted for.

“Fingers crossed we can now get the funding in place this year so building can start next year.”

The Holwell Pastures site will have new toilet and shower blocks and classroom and sleeping accommodation when the makeover is complete.

One of the advantages of the upgrade is the additional 40 bunk beds will enable more Beaver sleepover camps and there will generally be more room for Scout groups to be billeted there.

Mr Cliffe said: “We are just waiting now to hear back from the county scouts on our application for funding.

“They have a fund set aside for these type of schemes so hopefully they will be able to help us.

“Once that is in place we can then make an application for Lottery funding.

“In the meantime if there are any entrepreneurs in the Melton area who would like to contribute to the project we would be delighted.”

Minor improvements had been made to the camp site in recent years with refurbishments made to the existing kitchen, shower and toilet facilities.
