Melton air cadets take part in '˜Ready Steady Cook' challenge

Hosted by professional chef Tim Deacon the cadets battled it out to win the title of ‘Master Chefs’.

All had half an hour to prepare before the challenge started and after the allotted time their food choices were final.

To prepare, the cadets were given a list of ingredients from which they could choose a limited selection. With more than 10 cadets in each group (red flight and green flight), they were constantly under pressure to organise themselves and assign roles.

Cadet Corporal Sam Page (14), a winner of the winning flight said: “It was a real challenge. There was a constant sense of competition between flights.

Competition judge, Tim Deacon, said: “It was very impressive to see what the cadets achieved under such difficult conditions. I would’ve struggled.

“They should all be very proud of themselves, especially green flight who narrowly won.”

Anyone who is aged 12 and in Year 8 or above at school and is interested in seeing the wide range of activities on offer can visit the 1279 Melton Mowbray Squadron on a Tuesday or Thursday night, from 7.15pm at the Cadet Centre, Asfordby Road.

The Air Cadet Organisation is a youth company, made up of the Air Training Corps (ATC) and Combined Cadet Force (CCF) (RAF section), that provides opportunities for young people aged 12 to 20.

Cadets are offered the chance to experience flying, gliding, target shooting, take part in seven major sports, adventure training and many other activities.

As well as these, cadets get the opportunity to gain qualifications such as BTECs and First Aid qualifications.
