Melton families have no need to go to the seaside later this month because a beach is coming to the town.
The popular annual Melton by the Sea event is being held once again with a wide range of activities planned.
More than eight tonnes of sand will be used to create the seaside scene in Market Place for the four days and, to give punters a complete seaside experience, there will be pony rides, Punch and Judy shows, circus workshops, buckets and spades, fairground rides and sandcastle competitions daily with prizes.
The event, from August 19 to 22, is being organised and funded by Melton Council and the Melton BID Company, with additional support from Melton Promotions and the Melton Mowbray Town Estate.
Organisers hope to draw thousands of people to the town with lots of free family entertainment, including street entertainers, face painting, balloon modelling, flag making and sand castle competitions.
There will also be a Seaside Town Trail for the younger children with interesting facts about the British seaside to be learned, all in exchange for a free goodie bag.
Town centre manager Lisa Brown said: “We wanted to do something different for children and families during the Summer holidays and hopefully we can be a good substitute for the real seaside.
“Paris does a similar thing but on a much larger scale so why can’t Melton do the same.
“We hope that families come from all over the borough to join the fun but we also want to attract visitors from further a field so that we can really showcase what Melton has to offer.”
