Family thanks hospital with medical gift

Nigel Roberts organised a charity golf day at Stapleford Park Hotel and bought a new spirometer, to diagnose and monitor lung conditions, for staff at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital to use.

Mr Roberts presented the device to the cystic fibrosis team there as a thank you for the care they have given his sons, James and Oliver.

The family and their friends have raised more than £120,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust charity since the boys were born.

They will shortly be making the transition to the adult clinic at the hospital from the children’s department.

Mr Roberts said: “I chose the spirometer after speaking to the cystic fibrosis team about what they needed.

“The money raised, £3365, exceeds the cost of the spirometer so we will donate the additional funds to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.”

A spirometer measures how much air a patient can breathe out in one forced breath. It’s useful for doctors in detecting conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis or pulmonary fibrosis.

Naomi Dayman thanked Nigel and his family on behalf of the University Hospitals of Leicester.

She said: “This will allow us to complete the lung function tests in hospital but also at the child’s home or school.

“This piece of equipment is essential for the monitoring of our CF patients and will enable us to be able to complete more home reviews now we have this additional spirometer for the CF team.”

Nigel organised the golf day with best friend Neil Spencer.

There were 12 teams taking part, businesses sponsored holes and a raffle and auction were also organised.
