St Mary’s Birth Centre at Melton could close as part of a massive cost-cutting programme by the local health authority.

Plans have been leaked which show the University Hospitals of Leicester could axe the Thorpe Road facility to help save £400,000 million in the period up to 2021.

Also under threat in the draft version of the Sustainability and Transformation Plan are Hinckley and District Hospital while almost all community hospitals would be scaled back with Oakham losing all its in-patient beds.

A copy of the document, reported this morning by BBC Radio Leicester, also states that acute services at Leicester General would be re-located at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hopitals.

The Melton birth centre was threatened with closure three years ago when an NHS review declared it was ‘unsustainable’ with under 300 births there every year.

The draft report did not give a timescale on when the centre might be closed if the plans are implemented.

The Melton Times is awaiting response on today’s news from the University of Leicester Hospitals.
