Former dental nurse and technician Melanie Griggs (35) has opened the Belvoir Clinical Dental Laboratory in The Lodge at the Pera Business Park, in Nottingham Road.

She says the business will specialise in the manufacture of dentures, denture repairs and other dental appliances.

Ms Griggs said: “I supply both dentist and patients in the area.

“All of the appliances are made on site and I am also looking into being able to provide training and support for local dental practices.”

Ms Griggs, who is registered with the General Dental Council and works closely with local dentist Dr Rick Jethwa, said her decision to go it alone came after she had spent years as a dental nurse and technician before being made redundant.

She said: “I loved treating people and caring for them and decided to set up my own business making dentures.

“Doing this is a vocation - a life choice for me.

“To set up the business I secured a start-up loan, but the rest of the funding comes from my life savings and redundancy pay.”

“It is wonderful to see how much you can change people’s lives for the better. Teeth maybe a small thing but they mean so much to the patient.

She said: “I micro-manage everything and take great care to get the fitting absolutely right. Done incorrectly it can be traumatic on the patient.

“It is great when you give a patient their new dentures and they say you have made them look like their old self again.

“For a lot of people teeth are a life-changing thing.”
