Schools collections to help refugee children

Two concerned pupils from different village primary schools have encouraged their peers to collect items to send to Syrian refugee children.

Redmile year two child Gabby and Waltham year four pupil Oscar sought permission from their headteacher to arrange a collection of assorted clothing, shoes, blankets, tins of food and other products, after watching CBBC’s Newsround programme.

Representatives from Nottinghamshire’s Refugee Action visited both schools to collect the items, which will be sent direct to Syria, Calais and Greece to refugee camps.

Headteacher of both schools Julie Hopkins said: “Enabling the children to lead on this project has helped them to feel as though they are helping other children who are in need.

“Their caring attitude has received the support of both school communities and I am very proud of them.”
