Melton Gig Guide: August 31 to September 2 - Melton Times

Friday sees the return of the closed mic sessions at More Coffee. The closed mic sessions with James Joyce are now in their ninth year and continue to serve up some great music. Why closed you might ask? It was set up to give those who wish a chance to perform, with a full PA set up, in public, for family, friends and anyone who rambles in.

Sticky Fingers make a welcome return to the Noels Arms on Friday. However, Mick and Keef will be taking a well-earned night off, and instead will be letting Scampi, Ken and the band be the highlight of your weekend. This legendry tribute to the Rolling Stones, intend to keep on rockin’ just as long, if not longer than the original band.

On Friday, at The Geese and Fountain, in Croxton Kerrial, Revolver will take to the stage. Revolver hail from Boston, Lincolnshire, and have been gigging for six years. A classic four-piece indie covers band, their set is floor fillers and iconic anthems from start to finish. The gig is a birthday party for Arabella (fellow Melton Gig Guide admin), but everyone is welcome to join to sing along and dance the night away.

The Monuments of Rock N Soul debut at The Black Swan on Saturday. Monuments of Rock and Soul are four musicians with a penchant for the bygone days of the 50s and 60s, with some of them having lived it and others wishing they had been there. Expect to hear rock classics from The Who, The Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry to soul classics.

XMA will headline at the Noels Arms on Saturday. XMA will play the best fist pumping punk rock anthems, proper punk rock style from the heart! Hits from the likes of Rancid, Stiff Little Fingers, Angelic Upstarts, The Exploited, Anti Nowhere League, UK Subs and The Damned.

The Genny B is the place to be to see Gennie Lamps on Saturday. The Genie Lamps are a four-piece covers band from Lincoln. Some names that they cover are Eddy Cochran, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Deep Purple, Stray Cats, Undertones, UB40, Fontella Bass, Eurhythmics, Wilson Pickett, Soft Cell, Black Sabbath and The Doors.

The Grapes hosts Bakers Treat on Saturday. Bakers Treat are very different from the usual guitar-based bands on the pub scene. Dave is on sax and harmonica, Alan is on guitar and Nigel Baker is on trumpet and lead vocals. They have a varied and dynamic sound, and a natty line in waistcoats.

Warren and The Magpies will gig at the Noels Arms on Sunday. Warren and The Magpies have stolen a shiny collection of rock and pop classics and reworked them into a foot-stomping bluegrass folk style. They feature Malc Evans on vocals/guitar/mandolin/ukulele, Mike Hicks on bass/vocals, Jools Street on fiddle and Rick Medlock on drums. All of these musicians have appeared at the Noels Arms with bands such as Honky Tonk Rose and Doc Brown Trio.

On Sunday, at The Geese and Fountain, in Croxton Kerrial, Paul Carbuncle will perform. Paul studied English language at Newcastle University and linguistics at the University of Sussex. Now he puts those to good use shouting into a microphone. Paul’s folk-punk delivery blends with a heartfelt emotional depth and a significant amount of musical talent. Expect to laugh or cry, or maybe both, sometimes even at the same time.

The Saddle at Twyford will host solo acoustic performer Danny Wilson on Sunday. Although better known for his guitar heroics with Martin Turner (of Wishbone Ash fame) he has recently dipped his talented toes tentatively into solo waters. Expect to hear an eclectic selection of great songs from the last century, including a few rarely-heard obscurities.
