This year’s illuminations were turned on by the Mayor of Melton David Wright and by some of the stars of this year’s Wizard of Oz panto at Melton Theatre.

The fireworks which signalled the start of the festive season could be heard and seen from miles around, and fairground attractions meant that families were entertained long into the night.

Festivities leading up to the Market Place switch-on included the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary’s Church, Queen Victoria, Santa parade and grotto, stalls, a Christmas tree Angel Aerial Act and schoolchildren singing carols on stage.

Shops opened their doors offering some late-night cheer and there was also entertainment from dancers and local bands.

Jonathan McGrady who compered the evening said: “The lights switch-on event is something I always look forward to in the calendar year. It’s a great event for the community and the organisers, who sometimes go unoticed, do a great job.”
