The figures have been released as TV Licensing reminds students they could face a prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 if they’re caught watching live TV, on any device, without a licence.

Mark Whitehouse, spokesman for TV Licensing in the East Midlands, said: “We want to make sure students know a licence is needed by law to watch or record live TV on any device - including a laptop, tablet, mobile phone or games console.

“We encourage students to check if they need a licence by visiting our website www.tvlicensing.co.uk/student info or by calling 0300 790 6113.
