The Secret Life Of Pets (U) For anyone wondering how their pets behave when they’re not at home, The Secret Life Of Pets reveals their antics – dreamt up by the ingenious minds at Illumination Entertainment, the creators of Minions. Wily terrier Max (Louis C. K., American Hustle) loses his preferred pooch status when his owner acquires a large, sloppy mongrel named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). The pair find themselves lost in New York, where they meet a posse of abandoned pets led by a deceptively lovable rabbit (Hart). Their adventures radiate an acid wit, amply characterised by Chloe (Bell), a smugly obese pussycat: “I’m your friend, and as your friend I gotta be honest, I don’t care about you or your problems.” Hilarious. The Boss (15) In Melissa McCarthy’s latest fun-fest, she plays ruthless businesswoman Michelle Darnell, left homeless after being released from jail for insider trading. She moves in with her long-suffering assistant Claire (Bell) and her young daughter Rachel (Ella Anderson). Rachel’s girl scout group sells homemade brownies, an enterprise which Michelle wants to turn into a major money-spinner – this time, to benefit all concerned. Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 7.45pm.

Race (PG) This is the extraordinary story of how Jesse Owens, a poor African American from Cleveland, Ohio, became a quadruple-gold medal winner at Hitler’s infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics. Coach Larry Snyder (Sudeikis) pushes Owens (James) towards the Games, despite the racism Owens will face at home as well as in Europe. Monday at 6pm and Tuesday at 8.15pm.

Independence Day: Resurgence (12A) “We’ve had 20 years to prepare for this, but so have they,” warns scientist David Levinson (Goldblum) in this much-anticipated sequel to the aliens vs humankind sci-fi epic Independence Day. Following the aliens’ first onslaught, the world’s nations have established the Earth Space Defence System. But the emboldened extra-terrestrials are now planning an even larger-scale attack.
