The BFG (PG)

Steven Spielberg’s vision of The BFG could not have come at a more opportune time: this year we celebrate 100 years of Roald Dahl. What better way to mark the century of the adored British author than with a brand new big friendly giant? At the centre of the tale is Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), a characterful and curious young girl living in a London orphanage. One night, Sophie is let into an amazing secret: giants exist, and they deliver dreams into children’s bedrooms. Sophie discovers this when she is whisked off to a land of giants, where the BFG (Rylance) teaches her about dreams and protects her from his rather less friendly brothers, including the Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and the Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement).

Central Intelligence (12A)

Bullied as a teen for being overweight, Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) shows up to his high school reunion looking fit and muscular. While there, he finds Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart), a fast-talking accountant who misses his glory days as a popular athlete. Stone is now a lethal CIA agent who needs Calvin’s number skills to help him save the compromised U.S. spy satellite system. Together, the former classmates encounter shootouts, espionage and double-crosses while trying to prevent worldwide chaos. Friday at 6pm and Saturday at 8.45pm.

The Conjuring 2 (15)

Following the success of its 2013 predecessor, The Conjuring 2 revisits paranormal investigators Lorraine (Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Wilson). This time their mission is to help Peggy Hodgson (O’Connor, The Missing), whose home in Enfield, Middlesex is plagued by a malevolent poltergeist. The focus of the spirit’s destructive attention seems to be Hodgson’s two young daughters – or is it all merely a childish hoax? Friday at 8.30pm and Saturday at 6pm.

Me Before You (12A)

This eloquently moving yet uplifting tale follows quirky 26-year-old Lou Clark (Clarke). She becomes a care worker for wealthy young banker Will Traynor (Claflin), who was severely disabled in a motorcycle accident. Due to mutual misgivings their relationship begins awkwardly, but Lou is determined to transform the once adventurous Will’s doom-laden outlook on life. Monday and Wednesday at 6pm and Tuesday at 8.30pm.
