Focus on wildlife in Melton and Rutland through August

Activities such as wild walks, bat watching and butterfly spotting have been organised by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.

Enjoy evening wildlife watches at Holwell Nature Reserves on August 12 and 26, from 7.30pm. Take an a evening stroll to observe nocturnal wildlife such as badgers, bats and foxes.

Parents and tots can go on a wild walk starting at Rutland Water’s Lyndon Visitor Centre on Wednesday, from 10.30am to 12 noon. Explore the nature reserve with a relaxed introduction to some very special wildlife.

There is also a wild walk scheduled for families starting at Rutland Water’s Anglian Water Birdwatching, on August 7, from 2.30pm-4.30pm. Same booking details apply as the parents and tots walk.

Identify different species of butterflies on a two-hour walk for beginners on August 6, from 10am-12noon. Meet at the Lyndon Visitor Centre.

Experience bat swarming at Brown’s Hill Quary (next to Holwell Nature Reserves) on August 27, from 7.45pm.

Watch bats emerging from their underground hibernation. Bring warm clothes, refreshmets and something to sit on.

Alternatively, discover bats at Rutland Water’s Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre on August 28, from 8pm-10.30pm. Take a guided walk to listen and identify the bats using bat detectors.

A family fun day has been organised at the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre on August 28, from 10am-3pm. It includes crafts and a bug hunt.

No booking is required, suitable for all ages, £3 per person.
