An all-too-familiar theme played out at Thorpe Arnold Cricket Club last Thursday when the hosts were beaten by an Australian touring side.

Pinjarra CC were the guests of honour as Thorpe held their President’s Day for Nigel Lane on an overcast but warm afternoon.

Guests on the boundary rope also included former Australia vice-captain Geoff Marsh and BBC Cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew.

The tourists, from Western Australia, arrived fresh from a match in Brighton and were welcomed with a buffet lunch before the toss was made.

Pinjarra elected to bat first, but wickets tumbled at regular intervals as sharp fielding and excellent catches were taken.

Thorpe used several bowlers to keep the runs down to a manageable 160 all out.

When play resumed, Thorpe’s openers were pinned down by accurate bowling and an attacking field and found themselves falling well behind the required run rate. But the runs began to flow and the field spread as bowling changes were made.

The Thorpe batsmen came and went as the score crept towards three figures and it looked like a poor response until captain Mark Carnell came to the middle. He pushed Thorpe’s score to within 10 runs of the Australian total as they closed on a respectable 150-8 from their allotted 40 overs.

Former Thorpe bowler Sam Collins returned to guest for the club against his fellow countrymen having last played here in the 2008 season.

Scoring was done by Gabbie Lecoyte, and Ali McQuillan stood as umpire.

Charlie Read was named man-of-the-match and was presented with a bat by Pinjarra’s captain Mark Hennessy.

The teams enjoyed a barbecue before Pinjarra headed off to watch the second day of Australia’s tour match at Derby, and then on to their next match in Reading.
