Melton RFC look to start title party at Vipers

Champions-elect moved within a whisker of back-to-back league titles as they overwhelmed rivals Market Harborough on Saturday.

Harborough arrived at Burton Road in second place and with only two defeats all season, but were beaten 37-7 by a Melton side who need just a point to guarantee top spot in the Midlands Two East (South).

Lutterworth leapfrogged Harborough into second place, but trail Melton by nine points behind with only two games left, and it would take a highly unlikely scenario to overhaul the leaders.

Melton have lost just once in the league this season and would have to pick up no points from their final two games, allied to bonus-point wins from Lutterworth, to lose out in the final standings.

As well as more silverware, topping the table would also propel Melton, led by player-coach Gareth Collins, into Midlands One East, the second tier of Midlands rugby.

The champagne corks should be popped on Saturday when Marcus Badham and co travel to Leicester to take on third-bottom Vipers. Kick-off is 3pm.
