The event, sponsored by Melton Mowbray Lions Club, saw 10 teams, from school Years 5 and 6, battle it out across two group stages.

After some close, high quality games, Stathern and Frisby both secured a place in the final after defeating opponents Hose and Swallowdale in the semi-finals.

A very close final between the two village schools saw Frisby take the title with a golden try in extra time. They will now represent Melton and Belvoir in the Leicester-shire and Rutland School Games on Tuesday, May 17.

Swallowdale and Hose finished joint third, while St Francis won the Spirit of the Games Award for their teamwork. Also taking part were two teams from Brownlow, Ab Kettleby, Sherard, and St Mary’s.

Melton and Belvoir School Sport development manager, Clare Marlow, said: “I’d like to thank the rugby club for supporting the competition and also congratulate the teams who took part for making it so enjoyable.

“A special mention also to the Leicester Tigers Academy students, based at Brooksby Melton College, for refereeing.”
