Forwards and backs combine to set up big Melton RFC win

MELTON RFC SECOND XV 45 COSBY FIRST XV 5

AN entertaining game where Melton built on their strengths in the forwards and used the ball well in the backs, releasing wings and fullback Ip, Barton and Clarke to gain ground and score tries.

In the forwards the scrum held their own with Buxton hooking two or three against the head and every prop took the scrum forward. In the lineout Barratt provided a steady stream of good ball, supported by Ottewell who won more than his fair share.

Evans and Bunker hit the rucks and mauls, providing a steady stream of good ball for Harper and Williams at half-back. Learmonth used his pace to gain ground, and Greaves, McMullen and Simm took it up the short side which led to two tries for Greaves, one converted by Harper, for a 12-0 lead.

Cosby responded strongly and made it 12-5 with an unconverted try.

Melton went down to 14 men when Ottewell was sin-binned, but it didn’t stop Melton as Clarke danced his way up the touchline and round behind the posts to make it 19-5 with Harper’s conversion.

Two more tries before half-time from Ip and Clarke, both converted by Harper, gave Melton a 33-5 lead at the interval.

Coming down the hill in the second half Melton might have thought they would run away with the game, but Cosby had other ideas and were unlucky not to score when twice held up over the line as Melton showed their determination not to let the opposition back into the game.

Melton brought on the cavalry in Kerr, Broughton and Cornish–Boden and their fresh legs took the game away with a try each for Clarke and Ip, with Harper’s conversion completing the scoring.

Williams’ first game at 10 in some time showed great promise with one clean break leading to a score, while newcomer Barton fitted in well and provided a try-scoring pass and the unselfishness of Greaves in continually laying on try-scoring chances for others is also worthy of note.

Melton: McMullen, Buxton, Simm, Kerr, Cornish-Boden, Bunker, Evans, Broughton, Ottewell, Greaves, Barratt, Harper, Williams, Ip, Learmonth, Farrish, Barton, Clarke.
