Confident Melton RFC Seconds brush aside Jimmies challenge

MELTON RFC SECOND XV 60 AYLESTONE ST JAMES SECOND XV 17

MELTON Seconds carried on where they left off last week as the forwards set up a strong platform to run off or launch their pacey back line.

Harper and Williams dictated play, bringing the forwards on before switching play to the backs who gained ground. From one such break new boy Saunders broke clear, dummied and scored under the posts, Harper kicking the conversion.

Greaves added an unconverted try when the forwards set up a series of good rucks, and just before half-time Louth benefited from quick hands by the backs on the blind side to score in the corner. Jimmies’ penalty on the stroke of half-time made it 17-3.

Against the wind, but playing downhill in the second half Melton played with confidence and Louth got his second after a break in the centre.

Newcomer Oliver, who had set up a great break, was then on the end of a scoring pass to make it 27-3.

Simm was playing the game of his life with several strong runs and came close to scoring, but it was the other prop Swain who forced his way over after a series of rucks close to the Jimmies line. Harper’s conversion made it 34-3.

Melton’s backs were rampant and ran the ball at every opportunity. Learmonth took a well-timed pass and burnt clear to score under the posts, and Harper converted to make it 41-3.

Jimmies staged a revival and after a period of pressure scored a deserved try.

Melton added two converted tries in quick succession with Saunders getting his second try and Clarke injuring himself in the act of scoring.

Jimmies responded with a converted try, but Melton had the last word when the hard-working Ip got a well-deserved try. An entertaining performance from this young team.
