Melton RFC Under 9s travelled to Leicester with a squad of 23 to warm up for next weekend’s County Cup and were split into two sides.
The Lions had a very successful morning as they served up a strong all-round team effort against Leicester Forest, opening with a solid 7-2 win against LF second team with great passing play producing excellent tries.
The Lions coaches warned of the tougher challenge ahead against a mixed first and second team, and every player in the 12-strong squad did just that.
They were outstanding to win 9-1 and were denied a double-figure score by a scrum-half no pass rule right on the try line in the last play.
Coach Dean told his players they had all played a starring role and thanked the vocal encouragement and support from watching parents.
Melton Tigers squad didn’t fare as well against a very strong and organised LF first team.
From kick-off it was a tough, physical encounter and Melton were slow to start and without their usual pace and flowing game were always chasing the game at a couple of tries behind.
After a debrief from head coach Paul Moore, the second match was much more even against a mixed LF team.
Melton rediscovered their expansive play, with several key passing moves, and were unlucky to lose by one try in a high-scoring game.
