Melton RFC secure superb derby win against Syston

MELTON RFC UNDER 15s 27

SYSTON RFC UNDER 15s 12

A strong, blustery wind made conditions tricky, but keeping ball in hand, Melton pinned Syston in their own half from kick-off.

After a sustained attack on the line, Thompson broke the defence and stretched over the line to touch down.

A 22 drop-out by Melton after a charged down chip kick pushed the ball back upfield, and Dixon burst through for a try, taking advantage of a loose ball from the ensuing lineout.

With the game a little scrappy in places due to the gusting wind, Syston scored from a solid scrum.

The visitors followed that with a converted try just before half-time, but not before Sommerville had run in a try from a well-worked Melton lineout, as the hosts led 15-12 at half-time.

The second half saw determined tackling from both sides, but despite an injury to Jakes, Melton hit their stride.

From a rolling maul, Blyth popped the ball up to Johnson who broke and set up Garnett to run in from 70 yards out. Gunby made the conversion.

Sommerville was yellow-carded close to the end for playing the ball on the floor, but this made no impact on Melton who showed good strength and ambition to the final whistle. Johnson was deservedly man-of-the-match.
