Following last year’s snowbound football match, rugby was back on the Boxing Day agenda at Melton RFC for the annual Tom Neal Trophy clash.

Player injury and unavailability reduced this year’s fundraising match to an eight-a-side game on a smaller pitch, but provided the large touchline crowd to an enthralling game as Greaves’ Greats edged out Middletons’ Marauderers 64-58.

Stand-out performers came in the shape of Will Ward and Ben Shouler, but the Josh Crump Man-of-the-Match award went to young Jake Greaves who helped out both sides throughout the match.

The Jim Kempin ‘Big Tackle’ award went to the evergreen Alan Wade.

The event, which had raised more than £8,000 for charity over the year, this year raised £1,000 for the Cancer Vaccine Research Institute thanks to outstanding work in the clubhouse from Brian Hesford, Nicola Crane and auctioneer Ben Shouler.

The club wishes to say a special thank-you to Tony and Howard Rose for a great evening’s entertainment to complete a fantastic day.
