Promotion-chasing Melton RFC face a mouthwatering opener as they begin the second half of their league campaign on Saturday.

The First XV return from the league’s mid-season break with a home match against Rutland rivals Oakham at Burton Road (kick-off 2.15pm).

Melton’s first match of the year came in the Leicestershire Senior Cup last Saturday when they thrashed Leicester Forest 77-0.

The rout set up a clash with Hinckley in the next round on February 6.

Gareth Collins’ side have made a smooth transition after winning promotion last season and top Midlands Two East (South) by eight points from Market Harborough.

Melton’s impressive unbeaten league run stretches back more than a season-and-a-half and their only blemish in the Midlands Two this season came at Belgrave where they were held to a 22-all draw.

Oakham have enjoyed the better of the keenly-fought derbies in recent seasons, but earlier this term Melton got one over on their rivals with a handsome 37-20 win in Rutland in the second week of the season.

The visitors have had an inconsistent campaign, having lost their opening four matches before going on to win the next four, and currently lie fifth.
