They were slow to get going in their opening match against Coalville with some missed passing opportunities, but decent all-round play in a scoreless first half.

After the half-time team talk, Melton produced some wonderful passing, moving smoothly around the pitch and before long they went over for the first try. Two more unanswered tries followed to cap a 3-0 win.

There was then a short break before Melton took on the hosts in a predictably tough game.

Both teams played well, but the visitors maintained the upper hand and this was rewarded with a second-half try to give them a slender 1-0 win.

The final game was against Oadby, a quality side with some fearsome players.

The coaches briefed the players on tactics and emphasised good tackling technique as they attempted a clean sweep of three wins.

In a tough game with good attacking play by both teams, Melton balanced their play exceptionally well with strength in both defence and attack.

Several Oadby players were driven into touch by try-saving tackles as Melton took a firm grip of the game to take a 3-0 lead.

But the visitors attacked hard, utilising their exceptionally strong centre to drive for the line, but Beech, Davey and Griffiths ensured the ball was held up over the try line to give them a boost before the break.

The second half brought a well-deserved try for Oadby, the only try Melton would concede all day as they sealed a 3-1 win.

Back at Burton Road HQ, the rest of Melton’s squad saw off Mansfield to cap a wonderful day of rugby.
