Make a splash for charity

Melton Lions Swimarathon

Melton Lions Swimarathon

MELTON may be landlocked but you can make waves for charity by taking part in the 13th annual Lions Swimarathon.

Entries are now open for teams to register for what is one of the borough’s biggest single - and most fun - fundraising events.

It will be held at Waterfield Leisure Centre in Dalby Road on Saturday, April 13 and by signing up now you’ll have plenty of time to get sponsorship.

Last year some 27 teams took part and between them they raised nearly £6,000.

The event involves teams of four to six people swimming in relay for 55 minutes with the aim of completing as many lengths as possible and making the biggest splash they can for charity.

This year’s four good causes are Lost for Words? Active Melton, Mayor’s Appeal (Macmillan, the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance and Rainbows Hospice) and Melton Lions’ charitable projects.

There will be a Mars goody bag for every participant and a ‘thank you’ presentation night will be held on June 12 when the trophies, including one for the most original team name, will be presented.

Chief organiser Maddie Smith said: “It’s a fun event and as long as you can swim a length you can take part.

“Those who do come back year after year but we can cater for up to 45 teams on the day and the more we have the more money is raised for our fantastic good causes.

“So if you were inspired by our Olympic and Paralympic teams, want to support local charities or simply want to check out the new facilities at Waterfield following its £3.5m refurbishment come and join us.”

The Melton Mowbray Building Society is the principal sponsor of the event and other businesses are being sought to sponsor a lane. The cost is £60 and banners can be displayed poolside.

Businesses may also wish to consider pledging to double the money any staff teams raise in sponsorship.
