With Melton and District Indoor Bowls Club due to host the national finals in April, several of its members have been bidding to qualify.
Don Welch has been busy in the area qualifying stages of several competitions.
Don, who reached the semi-finals of the over 60s singles at Melton last year, has made it through to the area semi-finals of the men’s singles. There he will face Charnwood’s Adam Hirons for the right to play Steve Wade (Leicester) in the final.
Melton IBC are also two games away from the nationals in the men’s pairs. The pair skipped by Tony Wright have already won three games so far, but will have their work cut out in the semi-finals against skip Nathan Ware (Barwell) and partner who knocked out Welch’s pair 33-6 in the area quarter-finals.
Melton only got as far as the quarter-finals in the triples where Welch’s team lost to M. Allsop, while skip T. Warriner carried the fours flag for Melton to the second round.
Warriner won the area under 25s men’s singles title after beating Joe Dawson in the final, but his hopes of reaching the national finals were dashed by Wellingborough’s J. Walker in the inter-area round.
Melton still has interest in the latter stages of the area over 60s where John Robinson has reached the last four of the singles. He will play J. Leckie, of Leicester.
In the pairs, Welch has skipped his team to three wins to make the semi-finals where they take on the Church Gresley pair skipped by Terry Bosworth.
