Hirst will run for the Leicestershire intermediate boys team at the English Schools Cross Country Championships on Saturday, March 5 at Wollaton Park, in Nottingham.

The 15-year-old is the first-ever John Ferneley student to be selected for the intermediate boys’ team and the call-up has come on the back of his most successful season.

Hirst took the bronze medal in the county league thanks to his performances in five races between September and December.

It marked a big improvement from 2014 when he finished eighth in the league and just missed out on selection for the English Schools championships.

Hirst trains with town running club, the Stilton Striders, and is a regular at the Melton parkrun where his personal best over the 5km course is 18min 57secs and has finished as high as second.

Fellow John Ferneley pupil Owen Blair has also been named on the reserve list for Leicestershire’s junior boys’ team after finishing eighth in the county league.

If the call-up does not come this time, the Year 8 pupil will be hoping to emulate his schoolmate and win selection for the event next year.
