Isabelle (11) and A;ex (13) travelled to Church Gresley to represent Melton Indoor Bowls Club at the county under 16s pairs qualifying event.

Despite minimal experience in the pairs format, they got off to a winning start against Barwell, edging out the all-girls’ team 4-3.

Their second match against a mixed team from Leicester saw them make early inroads, but soon came under pressure and in the end they had to settle for a 9–9 draw.

This left them in a favourable position going into their final match, but by the time their third match got under way, with the other matches concluding, it became clear a win was essential for the Melton duo.

They stepped up to the mark with some excellent bowling before the sixth end when Alex bowled four exceptional woods to earn a five-shot advantage going into the last end.

The tension was high, but some well-placed woods made it impossible for the Church Gresley pair to get their required tally and an 8-6 win was secured.

The result left them second overall and booked their place in the county finals in April where they will play Joseph Noon and Alice Atkin (Church Gresley) for the title.

Both juniors, along with clubmate Toby King, will be in action again on Sunday, March 12 in the county under 16s singles qualifiers, also at Church Gresley.
