On a cloudy day played on a course made tougher by hard greens and unforgiving rough, Stoke Rochford achieved a creditable draw at Newark.

Best performers on the day were Greg Ewart and Alan Jessop who won 3 and 1.

Scores: Graham Manton/Brian Ayto match halved; Keith Dugmore/Barry Coop won 2 and 1; John Batty/Stephen Major lost 2 and 1; Brian Keightley/Tim Haward halved; Ray Elsome/Mick Rance won 1-up; Adrian Stannard/Chris Woof lost 3 and 2; Phillip Varley/Don Werner lost 3 and 1; Greg Ewart/Alan Jessop won 3 and 1.

* With Don and Dorne Werner missing or the home match with Torksey, Stoke club chairman Graham Miller deputised as match captain and helped provide a winning result.

The course and weather provided near-perfect playing conditions. Special thanks go to Mike Dickinson who played as a last-minute substitute after already playing 18 holes on the morning of the match.

He and playing partner Roni Proctor gained the best win of the day by 4 and 3.

* Stoke Rochford fielded a new pairing of Chris and Phillippa Smith for the annual match with The Nottinghamshire.

Richard Leverett supported the club’s lady captain Roseanne McKee, also on her first outing for the mixed team.

Three single figure handicap men were included in the pairings, resulting in some keen competition and a handsome win for the hosts.
