Heavy morning rain didn’t deter a good entry of 78 competitors from entering the ladies’ Scary Scramble Open at Melton Golf Club on Friday.

Many of the golfers got into the swing of things and dressed up for the occasion as witches, ghouls and zombies, and the winning fancy dress team even brought their own tombstones.

The rain abated and everyone completed their round dry for the Texas scramble competition with each team having to use three of each players’ drives.

The course played long but held up well through the recent downpours.

The team of Jean Stones, Janet, Peters, Anne Grey and Wendy Adcock (Trent Lock) won the spoils with a super nett score of 66.8, 5.2 shots under par.

Runners-up Shelly Pritchard, S. Bean, T. Ferguson and V. Siddons (Newark) scored nett 68.3, and Chris Cook, Kathie Finn, Gill Lund and Avis Webb (Melton, Forest Hill and Lingdale) finished third with nett 69.1.

* Fog delayed the shotgun start Inter-team Challenge contest on Sunday which was played by each of the club teams – the men’s scratch, B and C teams, seniors, ladies, mixed and juniors.

Eight players from each team played an individual stableford and the best six scores at each hole were used to reach a total result.

The seniors team won the day with 223 points, 12 clear of runners-up, the men’s scratch league team.

Third to fifth places provided a close contest with the C team taking third with 204 ahead of their B team counterparts (203), and the ladies (200). Dropping slightly behind were the mixed team in sixth, while the juniors were unable to field a full team and finished seventh.

* Dougie Bryce won the men’s stableford on Saturday with 40 points, one ahead of runner-up Brian Haines.

Kevin Newman took third spot, on countback, with 38 points, and the twos sweep was shared between Alan Sleath, Jake Mogg, Bev Blake and Brian Haines.
