Melton Golf Club: Goddard pips Curtis in trophy duel

Among some high-calibre scoring, a six-under handicap nett 64 was enough to secure the Petfoods Trophy for Steve Goddard, edging Mick Curtis into second spot after a countback over the back nine.

Steve Goddard also scored the lowest gross round and secured 600 Race to Woodhall Spa points. Dave Thornton finished third with a five-under handicap nett 65.

Twos sweep: George Boddy, Ken Longbottom, Mick Curtis, John Harvey, Phil Curtis (x2).

The Compton Cup, played for by 20 and above handicappers, was also won by another nett 64.

Sam Wright held off the in-form Colin Kitchen (nett 66) with Nigel Shaw in third after a nett 68. Trevor Jamson shot the only two in the division.

* Melton GC ladies’ section held their Open Am-Am on Friday, started off the first tee by John Squires who then served tea and cakes at the halfway house.

Teams of four played an am-am stableford with the best two scores to count on each hole.

The Best Friends team of Gay Cham, Fay Hutton, Sheila Davies and Diane Orson won with 82 points.

They finished just one shot ahead of the Kibworth Tarts (Isabelle Coughlan, Ann Jervis, Sonja Reid and Julie Hunt) who took second place on countback from The Yorkshire Terriers (Melanie Walker, Helga Morley, Sharon Scothern and Betty Nestor).

Nearest the pins: (5th) Sharon Scothern, (7th) Denise Eagle, (14th) Mel Steel, (16th) Julie Hunt. Longest drive (11th): Diane Orson.

The day finished with a meal and prize presentation by lady captain Bettyne Norton.

* An eight-under handicap round of nett 62 won the June Monthly Medal.

Gary Kitchen had a storming game to win without recording a two on his card.

Second place went to Jonathan Wade (nett 66) and Brendan Boyce returned to form with a nett 67, finishing third on countback from Guy Rayson.

Sam Pollard (nett 68) was fifth and also shot the best gross round, a level-par 70.

* Guy Rayson won the latest midweek medal with 39 points, two ahead of Garry Taylor.

Jake Mogg was third, fully three points clear of fourth place.

* The midweek stableford – and the ninth event in the Race to Woodhall Spa series, was won by Keith Tomblin who carded 40 points.

Runner-up Nigel Blunt was just one point back, while Malcolm Farrow took third place on countback from Brendan Boyce, both scoring 38.

* The heat didn’t deter the ladies taking part in the June Medal last Wednesday which was won by Denise Waldron with a nett 79.

Denise won on countback with a better back nine score from runner-up Kathie Finn.

* Last Monday, Melton GC seniors played an away fixture at Radcliffe-on-Trent.

On a course in excellent condition with fast greens, they were narrowly beaten four-and-a-half to three-and-a-half against a strong home team featuring several lower handicap players.

Point scorers for Melton were Jerzy Schmidt and Dennis Dayman (1-up), Haydn Snow and Brian Wray (2 and 1), Dave Bentley with Al Terzza (halved), and Eddie Cham with Dick Chapman (1-up).
