Market Overton Bowls Club held the first of two galas on Sunday when 80 bowlers from around the county competed over five rinks.
Rain postponed the bowling for 10 minutes late morning, but the day ran smoothly and the green bowled well thanks to the work of the volunteer greenkeepers.
Melton team Howzaat, consisting of lead Vince Darling, John Evans, Jenny McConnell and skip Les Woodcock won for the third time with a score of 41 shots, and each won £25.
The Clivid team, from Belvoir Vale, of lead Clive Underwood, Evelyn Underwood, Jon Marrick and skip David Keegan were runners-up with 36 shots and received £15 each.
The booby prize winners came from closer to home, Market Overton bowlers Jonny Abbott, Mary Slater, Mike Boddington with skip Frank Haynes.
Sunday lunch was supplied by Marge Hart, from Melton, and her team of helpers followed by tea in the afternoon, while there were plenty of raffle prizes, donate by the players.
The next Gala is on September 6 and will be restricted to 20 teams. Each play four games of eight ends and 10 over the lunch period. To apply, call the secretary on (01572) 812233.
* The next big day in Marko’s calendar is President’s Day on Sunday, August 9 which is followed in the evening by a performance by Melstrum Ukulele Orchestra. The concert, open to anyone, aims to raise money for Dove Cottage day hospice as the club celebrates its 70th year in 1940s style.
