Holwell Sports Bowls Club looked back on a season of success at their annual presentation evening.

The club had a good year on the national stage, qualifying on three fronts for the English finals at Leamington Spa after Neil Hope, Chris Rodgers, Mel Bass and Bob Lemon with substitute Tony Wright won the county fours and Chris and Neil won the county pairs.

The fours lost in the first round at Leamington, but Chris and Neil made it through to the national semi-finals where they were narrowly beaten.

Sue Lemon represented Holwell at the ladies’ national championships after winning through the county play-offs in the senior singles for the third time in four years.

She was also part of the Leicestershire ladies’ team who were runners-up to Surrey in the John’s Trophy.

In addition, Chris was called up to the England men’s senior international trial, while Neil Hope made it on to the reserve list.

Among the club competitions, Dennis Pearson won the men’s singles after narrowly beating Bob Lemon 21-19, while Sue Lemon retained her ladies’ singles title with a win over Norma Jackson.

Sue also took home trophies for the two bowl singles, ladies’ pairs with partner Beryl Kurth, and mixed pairs with partner Alan Tipper, coming from behind to beat Dennis Pearson and Anne Whittaker on the last end.

A strong finish also earned Audrey Kilby the ladies’ handicap singles.

Colin McNab claimed the men’s two wood singles and finished runner-up to Dennis Pearson in the men’s sets and men’s veteran singles, while Phil Hardy beat Richard Batsford to win the men’s novice singles.

But it was a landmark season for Richard who broke his 37-year duck by winning the men’s handicap singles and the men’s pairs with Bob Lemon.
