Vale of Belvoir middleweight Stan Stannard will box for a place in a national final this weekend.

The 19-year-old, from Harby, came through his Senior Novice Championship quarter-final without raising a fist in anger after his opponent Jarrett Doherty was ruled not fit to fight.

The Birmingham boxer suffered a cut during a clash of heads in a previous round, and on Friday morning he was withdrawn from the quarter-finals because doctors believed the stitches in the wound had not healed enough.

Stannard will now take on Hull boxer Matt Wigglesworth (Vulcan ABC) in the semi-final of the 75kg class B section on Saturday at the Dearness Valley Centre at Mexborough, in South Yorkshire.
