Round seven of Greetham Valley’s Winter Order of Merit series was played in the teeth of a cold, gusting wind on Saturday.
Chris Howe, off a handicap of 14, won with a terrific score of 41 points, one clear of former second team captain Steve Anderson who was playing his first full game after a major operation.
Peter Key played very well to come in with 38 points to take third place.
Martin Gore still leads the overall table with 140 points, while Carl Causbrook continued his steady climb up the table to reach second, only 12 points back.
Dave Copley is third with 127, Andy Webb is just a further point behind in fourth place, and Chris Tapsell is fifth with 117.
With two more games and the March medal results to take into account, it should be a very tight finish for the trophy.
* The 12 competitors in the Ladies’ Winter Order of Merit who followed the men home were also caught by a heavy downpour.
Last week’s winner Sheila Douty took third with 29 points to consolidate her second place overall, while junior organiser Liz Haughton was second with 31.
Her daughter Ellie cannot be caught in the overall standings after recording another win, scoring 19 points on the front nine on her way to a total of 34.
