Chris Tapsell beat Graham Smith and Dave Copley on countback, all with 40 points, into third place thanks to 20 points on the back nine in a consistent round.

The top two places were also decided on countback as 11-year-old Winston Childs and Peter Maksymiw both registered 43 points and were inseparable on the back nine countback with 21 points each. Peter took the top place thanks to 10 points on his final three holes.

In the overall standings, Peter’s win pushed him to the top of the table with 174 points, closely followed by Chris Tapsell (164) and Russ Holden (160).

Another nine players are all in with a shout of taking the title, but these three look to be the favourites.

* The Ladies’ Order of Merit is also moving into its final stages with only two more weeks to go.

On Sunday, wet conditions made play difficult for all, but Liz Taylor proved most adept at overcoming the challenge to win and take the maximum 25 merit points, closely followed by Jacky Bailey and Gilly Grant.

Isabella Condie retains the overall lead with 116.5, but is being pursued hard by Sophie Beardsall (103.5), Jacky Friend (99.5) and Liz Taylor (90). Kay Ropson also features on 89.5.

* On Sunday the first of the men’s Winter League knockout rounds took place with Tony Mould and Dave Copley opening against Graham Smith and Ian Copley.

The lead was closely contested throughout, but Tony and Dave eventually won 2 and 1.

Father and son Jon and Jamie Herbert then took on club captain James Ablett and club president John Sparks.

The result was seen by some as a surprise as James and John won by the very smallest of margins.

Sam McCall and Chris Ellis were well beaten 5 and 4 by last year’s winners Darren and Joe Sargood, another father and son team, and the last team through to the semi-finals is Tim Brown and Bob Aitman who beat Paul Dickinson and Martyn Thwaites 4 and 2.
