A dedicated running coach has been recognised with a regional award for his groundbreaking work with novice runners.
Stilton Striders member Rob Beers was named Run England Group Leader of the Year at the England Athletics regional awards for the East Midlands.
Rob organises and leads a beginners’ group at Parkside, in Melton, every Monday and at the start of January set a staggering attendance record when 85 new runners signed up in just one evening.
The group has continued to be one of the most successful in the country during 2015, supported by regularly-run 10-week Couch to 5k courses.
Many of the runners have gone on to compete at distances from 5k all the way through to a 50k ultra-marathon.
As well as dishing out encouragement, advice and gentle persuasion, Rob, who was also a Coach of the Year finalist at the Melton Times Sports Awards this summer, has also been known to join runners at their debut races.
Having been nominated for the Run England award, Rob was unable to attend the ceremony, but was presented with his prize, fittingly, before last Monday’s session.
