Melton Golf: Skipper sisters bring clubs together

The event was organised by lady captain Liz Snow and her sister Helen Grinham, who holds the same role at Market Rasen. The sister captains arranged a friendly am-am game with ladies from both clubs on each team.

Liz said: “Helen and I were very keen to get together with our ladies during our captain’s year and we’re pleased the day has been a success.”

The winners were presented with a Hackers and Whackers Trophy, a blow-up prize, along with inflatable golf clubs.

* The ladies’ Silver and Bronze Salvers were played in a par/bogey format.

Results – Silver Salver: 1 Leah Radford -3, 2 Nancy Denny -3, 3 Di Orson 15. Bronze Salver: 1 Liz Clark -2, 2 Chris Cook -3, 3 Barbara Hamston -4.

* Liz Snow was the clear winner of the Evans Bowl after a round of nett 76. She finished 12 clear of Bettyne Norton, with Sally Hudson coming third with nett 90.

* Melton GC’s junior section staged their Jubilee Trophy competition which was won by Will Thompson with 35 points from runner-up Jake Mogg (33 pts).

The Rabbit’s Trophy for players with handicaps over 29 was won by Louis Woodcock with a gross score of 53 from Ed Gough (55).

* The seniors played for the President’s Cup on Thursday when Frank Williams beat Neville Palmer to the trophy on countback after both shot a nett 72.

Countback was also used to decided third and fourth places with Denis Dayman’s back nine score knocking Ron Smith into fourth after both shot a nett 75.

* The first round of the men’s President’s Putter was won by Neil Farish with a three-under handicap score of nett 67.

Runner-up David Poolan shot a nett 68 and took second place on countback from Dougie Bryce. Mick Wilson’s round of 74 was the lowest gross score on the day.

Two’s sweep: Alan Sleath, Matt Catton, Mark Lewis, Dougie Bryce, Oliver Duley, John Burgess (x2).

* Handicaps 21 to 28 played the fourth and penultimate round of the Compton Cup.

Alan Terzza’s nett 68 secured first place from second-placed Ricki Curtis with a nett 70. Nigel Blunt shaded third position on countback with a nett 71, while Alan Terzza also won the best gross prize with a 91.

* Mick Wilson scored well in the midweek stableford with 34 points good enough to win, four points clear of runner-up Guy Rayson.

Nick Baines was third with 28 points.

* Melton C team gave a spirited display in their match at Lutterworth GC. 

Playing in good conditions, there were a number of close matches before the hosts came out on top four-and-a-half matches to one-and-a-half.

For Melton, Kevin Robertson and Mark Lewis won 5 and 3, while Ken Longbottom and Keith Tomblin halved their match.
