Melton Golf Club teams progress in Mail on Sunday comps

Melton Golf Club got their season off to a flyer as their men's and ladies' teams both progressed in the Mail on Sunday competitions.

The ladies’ team of Sue Hitchman, Drina Terzza, Maureen Stapleford, Denise Waldron and Julia Brown were drawn against Beedles Lake.

Last week’s heavy rain made ground conditions difficult, but a close match took place which resulted in a 3-2 win for the home side.

The first three Melton ladies out all won their matches to secure overall victory for the team.

Sue Hitchman was first out and did a super job in securing a 2-up win before Drina Terzza followed with an excellent 3 and 2 victory.

Maureen Stapleford secured another great result, winning by 3 and 1, and Denise Waldron and Julia Brown both put up a tough fight against the Beedles Lake ladies, but lost out.

* The men’s team of Sam Pollard, Callum Relf, Jevan Goddard, Mick Wilson and Steve Goddard were drawn at home to Greetham Valley.

The match was played in a good spirit and resulted in a 4-1 win for Melton.

Callum Relf won 2-up, Jevan Goddard and Mick Wilson both won by 3 and 2, and Steve Goddard registered a 6 and 5 win against his opponent.

* The wet weather and tough course conditions didn’t put off golfers taking part in the latest Monday Morning Mingles.

Tom Eadon and Elaine Shelton won with a nett score of 39.8, just beating runners-up John Squires and Bettyne Norton (41.0).

In third place were Denis Dayman and Alison Gatward 42.4.

The best fourball was Tom and Elaine with Sam Wright and Maureen Stapleford with a combined score of 82.2.
