Melton Golf Club: Radford crowned 2016 lady champion

Melton Mowbray Golf Club hosted a successful Ladies' Open on Friday as a field of 54 played a fourball am-am over 18 holes.

The home team of Kathie Finn, Denise Waldron, Di Orson and Sue Hitchman were clear winners with 75 points, a full 10 points ehead of runners-up Chris Cook and Alison Gatward with Forest Hill golfers Jill Lund and Trina Raftery.

Karen Middleton, Jean Moulds, Barbara Hamston and Sue Bailey were third on countback, also with 65 points.

* The ladies’ section 36-hole Club Championship took place on Sunday in very wet conditions.

Leah Radford led after the first round with a gross 86, well clear of Sue Hitchman (95).

She maintained this lead through the next round, with a score of 85, to take the trophy with a clear win of 171 gross, from Sue (191).

The best nett score went to Drina Terzza with 157.

* Melton hosted Forest Hill in round two of the County Foursomes and won the match 9-up.

The young pairing of Jake Mogg and Jack Griffin won their game 9-up, while Callum Relf and Oli Duley finished all square.

* There were some excellent scores returned in the Saturday Medal.

Matt Catton won with a very fine nett 64, from runner-up Stephen Draisey (nett 66), who won the Abbotts Senior Trophy, and Kevin Robertson in third with nett 67.

Sam Pollard shot 68 to win the lowest gross prize.

* A tight finish in the midweek stableford saw Sam Pollard take the win on countback from Matt Catton after both scored 36 points.

Garry Taylor finished third two points back.

* Melton’s senior men hosted Park Hill and came out on top by the narrowest of margins.

Al Terzza and George Hoskins’ vital half-point made all the difference in a four-and-a-half to three-and-a-half win.
