The week-long wet weather made the Melton Golf Club course long and affected the scores, with all players finding the going tough over the 36 holes.

Junior captain Jake Mogg was in pole position after the morning round with a gross 74, one shot better than Kieran Foster and two clear of 2015 runner-up Pollard.

But Mogg fell away in the afternoon, leaving Pollard and Foster fighting a tough battle for the championship. Pollard’s 74 left him three clear of Foster to clinch the title of club champion.

Mogg tied for third place with last year’s champion Callum Relf with a combined 156.

Nett sweep (morning): 1 David Poolan, 2 George Boddy, 3 Jake Mogg; (afternoon): 1 Callum Relf, 2 Neil Eaves, 3 Rob Smith.

The Senior Scratch Championship Trophy was won by Guy Rayson with a combined 167 from runner-up John Harvey (172).

* The Senior Abbotts Trophy on Saturday was won by Steve Draisey with a four-under handicap round of nett 66.

The winner of the gent’s medal was Matt Catton with nett 64, six-under handicap. Stephen Draisey’s 66 was second and Kevin Robertson took third place with a nett 67.

Sam Pollard won the best gross prize with 68.

Two’s sweep: Richard South, Chris Shardlow, Giles Hinch, Matt Catton, Richard Kendall, Matt Thomson, John Harvey and Guy Rayson, Steve Goddard (x2).

* Rob Smith won the men’s midweek stableford on Friday with 36 points. Kieran Foster was a close second with 34 on countback from Brendan Boyce in third.

* Melton GC’s ladies and senior men’s sections played for the Jack Wildman Trophy, a mixed competition played in a greensome format.

The clear winners were Haydn Snow and Sue Bailey with 36, three points clear of Alison Gatward and Dick Chapman.
