Melton Golf Club: Mail on Sunday team reach round four

Melton Mowbray Golf Club's ladies' team produced a terrific win to reach round four of the Mail on Sunday national matchplay knockout.

The team of Sue Hitchman, Drina Terzza, Maureen Stapleford, Denise Waldron and Leah Radford welcomed The Nottinghamshire for a home tie on Sunday and came through 3-2.

First and second out, Sue Hitchman and Drina Terzza both won their matches 3 and 2, but Maureen Stapleford and Denise Waldron both had tough contests and lost to their opponents on the 17th green.

The match came down to Leah Radford and she responded brilliantly, finishing her match on the 13th green, winning with a 6 and 5 margin with a three-over gross score after 13 holes.

Lady captain Liz Snow was delighted with the win and the team are excited to be through to the next round of the competition.

* The men’s stableford, played on Saturday, formed the second round of the Race to Woodhall Spa competition.

With the course playing long, the competition standard scratch increased by two strokes to 72 and reflected its difficulty on the day.

The top three golfers all scored 36 points with Pete Poolan winning on countback from runner-up Sam Pollard and third-placed Brian Haines.

There were 12 twos on the day, sharing the two’s sweep – Bill Hurrell, Brian Cole, Rob Grant, George Boddy, Chris Ward, Mick Wilson, Mezz Watchorn, Tim Mortimer Matt Catton, Neil Farish and Jon Wade who shot two.

Sam Pollard has made a strong start to his defence of the competition and currently sits top of the league alongside Richard South.

* Only four points separated the top four places in the seniors stableford last Tuesday.

Robin Jones won with a level-handicap 36 points, two clear of runner-up Brian Wray (34).

Dave Moss finished third with 33 points and Bob Barnes was fourth with 32.
