Melton Golf Club: Jamson dominates Captain's Day

A big entry of 176 members lined up to vie for a Fiat 500, the prize for a hole-in-one at the par three 16th, but the variable weather conditions saw the car, donated by Motorpoint, remain unclaimed.

Club captain Jack Inguanta had set the course up to be a challenge, but overall winner Jamson scored a sensational 43 points, to finish eight clear of the rest.

The competition was played in divisions and open to all members with a handicap, with spot prizes on offer.

Ladies’ winner Denise Waldron scored 29 points to finish two ahead of lady vice-captain Bettyne Norton, while lady captain Liz Snow was third with 26.

James Daulby won the junior prize ahead of junior captain Jake Mogg.

Club chairman Phil Millward, the captain in 2002, won the past captain’s prize with 33 points.

* Alan and Gill Tubb, along with Paul and Lynne Bartram, made a good defence of their Senior Mixed Open title last Thursday.

They held the clubhouse lead until the last group of Denise and John Waldron with Steve and Karen Middleton pipped them with a score of 76.

The Tubbs and Bartrams scored 73 for second place, while Owen and Chris Cook, playing with Visitors Steve Jones and Val Betteridge, took third spot with 71.

Men’s nearest-the-pin (7th) Haydn Snow; (16th) Robert Frost. Ladies’ nearest-the-pin (5th) Helen Fleming (Rugby); (14th) Joan Boot (Forest Hill).

* The ladies’ section played the club round of the LGU Ping Fourball Betterball last week.

The winners Kathie Finn and Denise Waldron scored 36 points and will be entered into the regional round if their score is high enough to qualify. Bettyne Norton and partner Sally Hudson came second with 31 points.

* A total of 35 points won Chris Vose the men’s midweek stableford, four shots clear of runner-up Malcolm Farrow.

Mick Pollard was third with 24 points and won the sweep with the only two of the day.

* Dave Poolan celebrated victory in the 2016 Goodacre Rose Bowl on Sunday.

The competition is run alongside the final round of The Open Championship with members drawing the name of a professional playing at Troon later that day.

They then play an individual stableford with their points being carried forward to reduce the gross score of the professional. The lowest nett score wins.

David played superbly in the morning to score 36 points in tricky conditions off a standard scratch of 73, and lead Matt Catton and Cliff Daulby by two points to await the final day scores at Troon.

Cliff drew level with Dave as Rory McIlroy recorded a 67 against Andy O’Sullivan’s 69, but the win went to Dave by virtue of his superior stableford score.

* Melton C team, who were on a good run of results, suffered a heavy defeat at Forest Hill. 

Played in good conditions, the hosts made full use of their local knowledge of the greens to record a 5-1 win.

Melton’s successful pair was Mark Lewis and Dave Bailey who won their match 2 and 1.
