Melton Golf Club: Father and son win coveted Pork Pie Open

After a murky start, the day was glorious for the 228 players who returned some great scores.

Jon and Gavin scored a tremendous 44 points to finish two clear of Tim Mortimer and Dan Pollitt who were second on countback from Steve Riley and Neil Farish.

The next five prize places were separated by just one point with Dave Timbrell and Mark Lewis, Peter and David Poolan, and Mike Sissons with Chris Ryl all scoring 41 points and taking fourth, fifth and sixth respectively on countback.

Russell Bunn and Steven Wells, in seventh, and Chris Budd with Chris Frake, were also split by countback after both pairs carded 40 points.

Best gross score went to Chris Gartland and Ian Bulleymore.

A new challenge was set up on the first hole by event sponsors Dickinson and Morris: the closest drive to a group of pork pies built on the fairway at 200 yards with a Dickinson and Morris flag to aim at.

This proved popular and caused a lot of consideration on the tee, especially for the long hitters. Winner Mark Lewis was presented with a special Pork Pie by Dickinson and Morris managing director Stephen Hallam.

The evening presentation saw club captain Jack Inguanta and Stephen Hallam present the prizes.

* Melton Golf Club juniors played the Keightley-Kerr Putter during the school half-term holiday.

James Daulby managed the cold windy conditions the best to win with 38 points from runner-up was Will Thompson and Joey Smith in third.

The nine-hole medal for pre-handicap players was won by Noah Burgoine from runner-up Jack Standeven, with Ed Gough third.

* Melton ladies achieved their best result in the four-way friendly match against Greetham Valley, Spalding and Belton Woods golf clubs.

In a very close match, Melton finished tied for first with Greetham Valley, losing only on countback.

Team players were Liz Snow (captain) Bettyne Norton, Drina Terzza, Chris Cook, Liz Clark, Cheryl Osborne, Maureen Stapleford and Sally Hudson.

* The Coronation Foursomes was won by Julia Brown and Dorothy Jaggers with 28 points.

Sue Bennett and Chris Cook were two points back in second, and Liz Snow with Liz Clark were third with 21.
